Let the Training Begin: How to survive your first swim of the season

Jump right in!

team ethos jumps right in the water

Yesterday marked the official start to the Tuck Triathlon team’s training program, and what better way to kick off the season than with the SWIM.  As Kelly mentioned in her post from last week, building up your endurance is key to gaining momentum in the water.  In addition to following a workout that you can build on each week, it is important to also build up your mental strength before diving in.  Since the last time I swam competitively was in middle school, I thought it might be helpful to share my insights on “How to survive your first swim of the season” (or first swim in years).  Follow these quick tips to get yourself mentally ready to jump right in:

How to survive your first swim of the season:

  1. Power in numbers! Bring your friends/classmates/workout buddies/teammates to the pool with you to train together.  You will be amazed at how much harder you work with others around, and you will push yourself more than you would have if you were alone.  AND you will have more fun while you are at it!!
  2. Find your rhythm first!  The first week of training is meant to develop your technique and to make yourself comfortable in the pool.  Remember to build yourself up from the base and not try to reach your limit in the first week.  Focus on your technique, be honest with yourself and stay on course.
  3. Befriend the water!  For some of you, this will be your first time in a pool in a while, or your first time ever – but there is no reason to be anxious.  Don’t think, just GET IN THE WATER and have fun. If you have the right attitude, you will leave feeling great and will look forward to the next swim workout!

What tips do you find helpful in your personal swim workouts?

Pump up Your Team Workouts with the Jammypack

January 11, 2012

At ethos, we are all about music and training for triathlons with friends.  That is why my favorite workout gadget is the Jammypack, which allows team ethos to rock out together while we are swimming, biking, running, or just having a late night dance party.  The Jammypack is great for long runs and rides because it is comfortable to wear and large enough to carry items that I may need like  snacks and sunglasses.  Best of all, the Jammypack comes in tons of awesome colors and funky patterns that will style up any outfit!  My only advice, if you decide to take your jammy skiing with you, think about turning down the volume in the lift line because some people may not appreciate Rihanna’s We Found Love ft Calvin Harris quite as much we do.

Musical Inspiration: 2012 Coachella Lineup Announced

January 10, 2012

The lineup for Coachella 2012 has been announced and it’s inspired me to do two things:

(1) Put it on our calendars and try to get a crew together to go

(2) Put some of our favorite bands that will be there on repeat and start digging into those we don’t know  yet

Look for a Coachella-inspired January Running Mix coming soon, but in the meantime, do some of your own exploration and let us know your new favorites!coachella, music, festival weekend, triathlon
